40 2017 Official Visitor Guide FOOD & DRINKS (800) 933-2627 NATURE & WILDLIFE T he Golden Isles is home to significant pockets of maritime forests, which are naturally occurring coastal habitats. Although threatened by commercialization along most parts of the Atlantic Coast, the large number of forests remaining here are due to the responsibly-managed practices. Efforts to save and protect the Golden Isles maritime forests can be seen throughout the islands and make for a unique setting. These wooded habitats are complete ecosystems that allow live oaks, southern magnolias and others to shade an understory of species such as the American holly, wax myrtle, saw palmetto, Spanish moss and more. You can see maritime forests on a grand scale on Little St. Simons Island and throughout many parts of St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island.
